COMO, 80'S. A GROUP OF KIDS WITH AN INCREDIBLE PASSION FOR EXTREME SPORTS, A LAB, A STEREO AND A MUSIC TAPE FULL OF FUNKY TRACKS.

To the rhythm of music the kids experiment, design and build boards of all types, branding them with the writing ‘Funky’. Among the various experiments, inspired from overseas, was born the first snowboard ever made in Italy. Lucio Longoni (Godfather of Funky) decides to call this first model 'Preistoria', almost as a premonition of the long and prosperous future that this sport will have.

PREISTORIA

The 'Preistoria' is a 120 cm long board entirely made of wood, and it has some features that were not obvious for the time, namely an hint of camber, a hint of sidecut and a raised tip with an hand-brushed ‘Funky’ writing. A true modern fossil that we managed to bring to light by digging through our archives.

From that day Funky began a period of incessant technological development that managed to bring its boards to the podiums of world snowboarding.

Dal quel piccolo laboratorio comasco, quel gruppo di ragazzi prende parte all'era pionieristica di questo sport, e a partire da quella tavola di legno inizia l’incessante battaglia di brevetti che porterà all’oggetto tecnico che conosciamo oggi, passando dallo snurf al progetto di attacchi per gli scarponi da sci, arrivando poi alla progettazione di softboots e dei bindings moderni.

SNOW

The world of snowboarding, which initially had more of an 'Alpine racing' connotation, with ski boots and rigid bindings, gets contaminated by Funky's skate style, as demonstrated by the half pipe jams which are also starting to spread around Italy, attracting team athletes of the caliber of Kurt Heine and Todd Richards. Manuele Dondi, on the other hand, takes extreme snowboarding to a next level, using Funky boards on slopes never reached by riders until now.

SURF

The experimentation on Funky boards goes as far as surfing, with the development of custom boards for both wave surfing and windsurfing, which in those years spread on Lake Como also thanks to the presence of the brand in the area.

SKATE

In skateboarding, the ever-present Max Bonassi continues to excel in street contests, making his pro model with the historic yeti Grog graphics famous throughout Italy.

In just a few years the Italian brand became one of the main European snowboard brands, expanding its customer base even overseas, but unfortunately the years of great glory did not last long.

During the production of a large batch of boards, destined for the American market, a flood destroyed a big part of the machinery and the boards ready to be delivered, which got reduced to little more than a pile of wet wood. Funky dies as quickly as it grew, and that lab full of ideas was reluctantly forced to close its doors. But great ideas cannot remain in the dust for too long…
